Marriage data show a strong degree of positive assortative mating along a variety of attributes. But since marriage is an equilibrium outcome, it is unclear whether positive sorting is the result of preferences rather than opportunities. We assess the relative importance of preferences and opportunities in dating behaviour, using unique data from a large commercial speed dating agency.

In this post, survey data collected from several speed dating events is analyzed. The events were conducted between and by two professors from Columbia University: Ray Fisman and Sheena Iyengar. In addition to questions about personal interests, the survey includes academic and occupational questions as well. The survey results are contained in a CSV file. Each row in the data set represents a pairing of two partners during the event.
The rows contains information about both individuals as well as several computed interaction values. First, the data is grouped by field of study and averaged. A chord chart is constructed showing the number of matches between different fields of study. Next, the averaged data is shown in a column and line chart. The columns display the average ratio of partners expressing interest to total partners for each field.
The line represents the number of participants in each field. Participants from languages and medical match with the largest ratio of their partners.

Initiating a romantic relationship invokes an approach-avoidance conflict between the desire for affiliation and the fear of rejection; optimally, people should selectively approach potential partners who reciprocate their interest. This may be difficult for anxiously attached people: They may be unpopular, and their ambivalence could lead to either a fearfully selective approach at the cost of missed opportunities or an unselective, indiscriminate approach at the cost of increasing rejection.
Using a speed-dating paradigm, data were collected from participants, and a signal detection framework was applied to examine the outcomes. For anxious participants, speed-dating attendance was motivated by loneliness. At speed dating, they were unpopular and unselective; they missed fewer opportunities but made more failed attempts. Anxious men made fewer matches than nonanxious men, whereas anxious women were buffered by having a response bias toward saying “yes” to potential partners.
Attachment anxiety predicted outcomes above and beyond the powerful impact of attractiveness. While the user-centered design methods we bring from human-computer interaction to ubicomp help sketch ideas and refine prototypes, few tools or techniques help explore divergent design concepts, reflect on their merits, and come to a new understanding of design opportunities and ways to address them. We present Speed Dating, a design method for rapidly exploring application concepts and their interactions and contextual dimensions without requiring any technology implementation. Situated between sketching and prototyping, Speed Dating structures comparison of concepts, helping identify and understand contextual risk factors and develop approaches to address them.
We illustrate how to use Speed Dating by applying it to our research on the smart home and dual-income families, and highlight our findings from using this method. Unable to display preview. Download preview PDF.
